Jon Sterckx performing with tabla

Jon Sterckx is a versatile percussionist and tabla player based in Devon, South West UK.

Jon has worked across a wide range of musical styles, from Indian classical music and other traditional musical forms to contemporary experimental styles, theatre & dance collaborations, live multi-percussion sampling and many fusion collaborations.

Jon's journey into percussion began in the late 1980's, since when he has explored and experimented with instruments and concepts from various musical forms, particularly from the North Indian, Middle Eastern and West African rhythmical traditions.

Since the mid 1990's, Jon has concentrated mainly on Indian tabla, which he has studied both in the UK and in India with several teachers including Harjinder Singh Matharu (UK), Kailash Nishad (Benares, India) and Shivanand Bandari (Karnataka, India), and on combining rhythmic ideas and techniques between different instruments and musical forms. This he continues to do, alongside combining these with technology through computer based recording and live sampling performances.

Jon completed a BA ( Hons ) Music degree at Dartington College of Arts in 2000, where he specialised in performance / composition. He now works as a freelance musician, primarily as a performer, but also works as an instrumental tutor, session musician and holds workshops in schools & colleges. He performs with various artists and groups including multi instrumental duo Taaliqa, the band Sarcere, and fusion group Dhani, as well as his solo multi-percussion sampling performances. ( see Projects page)

Jon regularly performs in arts centres, music venues, festivals etc. as well as private events such as parties, weddings, functions etc. throughout Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset, Wales & across the South West, and is available for performances throughout the UK.
